Sunday, September 7th
17th Sunday after Pentecost Let us behave decently, as people do in the day,
...not in quarreling and jealousy. -Romans 13:13 Conflict is a part of relationships and life in community. Jesus' words in Sunday's gospel offer practical advice on how individuals--and the Church as a whole--should show wrongdoers their need for repentance. The prophet Ezekiel tells of warning
the wicked to turn from their ways, and Paul reminds us that love is the fulfilling of the law. We gather in the name of Christ, assured that He is present among us with gifts of peace and reconciliation.Ezekiel 33:7-11, Romans 13:8-14, and Matthew 18:15-20. Click this link to be taken directly to the readings online.
These are the appointed readings for this Sunday. In response to Sunday's festival nature at Zion, the preacher may change the readings to reflect the occasion.

Welcome in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ!

Thank you for stopping by our website to check us out. Zion is more than a website. It is a community...a family really. Because we share the same heavenly Father, we work together, play together, pray together, and look after each other's welfare. We also rejoice in welcoming others, like you, to our fellowship.

The home page is really more like a virtual foyer where you may glimpse the rooms under the Zion Ministries roof. I believe you'll see the loving community that dwells within, making it a home. The website with its many links allows you to have the run of the house, to see something about our fellowship and the services we offer the people of our community.

We invite you to come to our real home, located at Ninth Ave. and Anza St. in the Richmond District of San Francisco. You will always find us at home at 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. every Sunday morning-as well as at many other hours during the week. We would love to welcome you, and help you get better acquainted with us.

We would enjoy speaking to you in person regarding whatever need or interest brought you to our home page or might lead you to our house. Frequently asked questions
What do Lutherans believe?
Lutherans share with all other Christians the Trinitarian faith (the One True God, who has revealed himself to us in Three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) as confessed in the Apostles', the Nicene, and the Athanasian Creeds. All of these can be found in the front of our hymnal. We give special emphasis to the doctrine of justification by faith. That is, we understand the Scriptures to teach that a person can in no way make right his or her relationship with God by his or her own efforts or good intentions. He or she is and remains a sinner who daily offends a holy God. However, God still loves us, and in his mercy sent his Son Jesus to die and rise again for us. For Jesus' sake he forgives our sins and restores us to a right relationship. This is his doing--it is a gift, not something earned. Visit What Lutherans Believe for further explanation.

In What Ways Does Zion Serve the Community?
For over a century Zion has existed in its present location serving God and the City. It has provided a place where people come together to worship God, receive instruction in His Word, receive the Sacraments, and find Christian fellowship and love. For 60 years Zion Day School has been developing literate Christian citizens. Day in and day out Christians leave these walls to go out into the mission field, their homes and neighborhoods and places of work, to witness to God's truth and love.

May I Come to Communion?
The Sacrament of Holy Communion is a communion or participation in holy things that God himself instituted for Christians to eat and to drink. He has promised that what we receive isn't just bread and wine, but the very Body and Blood of His Son, Jesus, given for the remission of sins. It is important, as Scripture says, to examine ourselves before eating and drinking, and to receive the Sacrament believing that we receive what it offers. For this reason, the Sacrament of Holy Communion is limited to those who are baptized and instructed in the Christian faith.

It is important that those who participate share with us the conviction of the Real Presence of our Lord, and the real reception of his body and blood for the assurance of forgiveness. If you are at all uncertain, we invite you to talk to Deacon Tom prior to coming to Holy Communion at Zion for the first time.

August 2008

Dear Zion Parent Teacher League Members:

Welcome to the 2008-09 school year!

As Zion Lutheran Day School embarks upon another year of Christian education and academic excellence, let us continue to give thanks and praise to our gracious Lord for His love for this unique K-8 school ministry since the 1940s.

Through the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, Zion Lutheran Day School remains one of the top academic schools in all of San Francisco. In order for Zion students to continue to grow in wisdom and stature, we parents and teachers must also continue to be enthusiastic and faithful partners.

Two years ago, representatives of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges visited Zion and declared that our PTL is a model for positive parental involvement and teacher dedication. I know that this will continue in 2008-09. I also know that you will do the following over the next ten months — and more:

Sell magazines Provide classroom snacks Attend classroom field trips Actively support Principal Donna Laughlin
Volunteer for our third annual community carnival

The volunteer opportunities are endless. I look forward to serving with you.

In the service of Jesus Christ,

Rufus J. Davis, Jr.
Sixth Grade Parent
   PTL President

Zion Ministries: More than 100 Years of Service and Commitment 1902-1945: Pastor Liebe Builds a Community Turn of the century San Francisco was wild and wooly. It was also an eclectic mix of hardworking immigrants representing diverse religious convictions. Such was this unlikely environment for St. Paulus to begin a branch Sunday School in the Richmond District, which was "rural" sand dunes. By April of 1902 the first Lutheran Church service was held in Richmond Hall at 4th and Clement Street, led by Reverend M.L. Liebe. On May 3rd, 1903, the German Zion Evangelical Lutheran congregation was organized. Zion's original 1905 sanctuary building at 9th & Anza. It was sold to the Park Presidio Baptist Church in 1950 and moved in two sections. It was then reassembled at its present location, 10th & Cabrillo, where it sits today. Those pilgrims of Zion, not unlike Zion's leaders today, were motivated and things began to happen very quickly. By winter of 1904, Rev. Liebe was installed as the first Pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, and in August of 1905 the official articles of incorporation were filed with the Secretary of State. Later that fall, the congregation bought the corner lot at 9th Avenue & Anza to build their church. As you would expect of a Lutheran church at the turn-of-the-century, Pastor Liebe's congregation was German...and more German. That first lot for the first church cost a then-hefty $500. Pastor Liebe's grandson, Paul Janke reports that Pastor never owned a car and served the community on public transportation. In 1917, a school opened but would be short-lived when its sole teacher was drafted in 1918. During Pastor Liebe's forty-plus years at Zion, the church became self-supporting and faithfully acquired additional land around the church. He would see the shift from German-language services to the addition of an English service on Saturday evenings, to the eventual change to English in the '30s. Pastor Liebe and his wife untiringly served Zion and San Francisco until December of 1945, when Rev. F.A. Jacobsen was installed. Pastor M. H. Liebe & Pastor Frank Jacobsen (PJ) at the ground breaking of the current church building, 1950. Next: 1945-1985: The Jacobsen Dynasty

Zion Ministries: More than 100 Years of Service and Commitment 1945-1985: Expansion in the Jacobsen Dynasty Zion Lutheran School class, 1946. Standing are Pastor Jacobsen & Miss Rahdert, teacher. The school's 19 students were housed in the parish hall of Zion's original building. And so the torch was passed from one visionary Church leader to the next. The congregation moved to purchase the church's first parsonage with a loan from the San Francisco Bank, and later funded it through interest-free notes. On September 3, 1947, Zion Lutheran School opened with 19 students under the capable leadership of Miss Verna Rahdert, Principal and Teacher. During the early months, classes were held in the church's social hall, but moved in January to a classroom fashioned from converted Army barracks. Interior of Zion's original church building, 1908-1950. The sanctuary held 150 people, compared to today's sanctuary which holds 350. Pastor Jacobsen found his church in a dilemma. With a communicant membership of 350 and seating capacity of 150, something bold needed to be done. It was time to build a new church. The people of Zion wanted a new church and illustrated this dramatically with sacrificial gifts: one family gave up their vacation fund; another their funds for a new automobile; and yet another borrowed from their life insurance. The estimated cost of the new church was $150,000, with $60,000-$75,000 required to begin. Zion's church building today, completed in 1956. The sanctuary can hold 350 people, with overflow space in the parish hall. And so in 1950, the little church at 9th and Anza was sold to the Park Presidio Baptist Church and was moved three blocks down the street to 10th Avenue and Cabrillo Street. The dedication of Zion Lutheran Church was held March 11, 1951, led by Pastor Jacobsen, and attended by Pastor Emeritus Liebe. Mr. Eric von Fange, School Principal (and organist for the event) and Miss Helen Hilst, teacher at Zion Lutheran School, had joined the ministry in the fall of 1950, and participated in this celebration. The Parish Hall came first in 1951 and was followed by the Sanctuary in 1956. The school would increase its role in the parish's mission field. More than sixty-five families were represented by the 87 students in the school, and only half were Zion members. In a single year 65 adults and children were confirmed at Zion and an additional 52 were received through profession of faith or transfer. In 1955, Helen Hilst would become Zion's principal, a role she would play until 1993, through many changes in the ministry. One of the first major changes would be the parish's education facility. The Education Building Dedication would be held on October 17, 1965, just on the brink of the turbulent 70's and all the changes that would mean for the country, San Francisco, and Zion's neighborhood. Busing, which began locally in the early '70's created "white flight" as families began to flee the city for safe suburban havens and "good" public schools. Many stalwart city-dwellers began to look for private schools to ensure their children's education in a safe environment.

Zion Lutheran School had established itself as a safe, loving Christian atmosphere with high academic standards. At the same time, the Richmond neighborhood was quickly becoming home to second-generation Chinese families, many were attracted to the education that Zion offered.
This led Zion to a new mission field. Guided by families who wished to add Chinese language and culture to their students' academic life, Zion opened its first Chinese school in the mid-70's.

Pastor Jacobsen led this outreach charge and soon a Chinese pastor was conducting Chinese school during the week after school, and worship in Chinese on Sunday.
Sharing facilities and developing a multi-cultural ministry has not been without its problems, but with love and prayer the Zion community grew through these issues. The seventies also saw Zion's junior high students move to a renovated house on 10th Avenue, which stands today as our Junior High facility.

By the early eighties, the school had 220 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, plus a very active youth group. Needing more room for youth ministry and physical education, Zion launched construction of a new gymnasium in June of 1982. Lloyd Goez, a Zion member since Pastor Liebe's tenure, left his entire estate to Zion School. This $170,000, plus funds raised by school events, financed the expansion. Zion Ministries:
More than 100 Years of Service and Commitment
1986-2007: The Zimmerman Years The eighties and nineties were filled with shifts in leadership throughout Zion. Pastor Jacobsen retired in 1984.
Rev. Ted Zimmerman was called in 1986 to become the congregation's third pastor. Helen Hilst retired as principal in 1993 and
Carolyn Grundt was called as Zion's new principal.

After Ms. Grundt's resignation in 2007,
Donna Laughlin became Zion's current principal.

This period also included an influx of new teachers; Elaine Zimmerman and John and JoAn Jacobsen joined Master Teacher Charles Klein and an established teaching staff.

Pat Freeman also joined Zion's staff in 1986.

Rev. Richard Rice was called as Associate Pastor for School and Family Life in 1998, to complete the new leadership team at Zion. To better serve the needs of Zion’s members, an elevator project was begun in 1998 and completed in 1999, making the facilities far more accessible.Additional staff and program growth has led to the expansion into the Annex building on 9th Avenue, north of the school. Zion Day School’s six-year accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges closed the nineties. But Zion’s spirit of building to accommodate the needs of a growing ministry has not diminished. Guided by ministry leaders and fueled by the Lay Leadership, Zion embarked on another large building initiative in 2003 to expand the ministry facilities and provide much needed classroom space for our Junior High students. Snags in the process, both from within and without, have caused the building expansion to slow--but not stop! Zion keeps plugging on, confident in the knowledge that God will bring us through it when the time is right.

In 2007 Pastor Ted and Elaine Zimmerman both retired from their ministries here, at Zion. At present, the congregation is being run by a group of very determined and dedicated lay members.

It is always an exciting time at Zion and right now is no different. So many plans in the works, so many dreams to realize, but mostly, so many lives left to change!
